VinsnowKaren Maldonado Dies in Mesa Car Accident at Southern Avenue and Stapley Drive
Mesa, Arizona (August 24, 2023) – 23-year-old Karen Maldonado was killed and another person was injured in a multi-vehicle collision on Wednesday afternoon in Mesa.
According to Mesa police, the accident happened at the intersection of Southern Avenue and Stapley Drive.
Maldonado was driving a Mazda sedan and had stopped for a red light at Stapley when a speeding Ford pickup truck hit a curb near Stapley Drive.
The Ford then sideswiped a silver Chevy, which then rear-ended Maldonado’s car, triggering a chain-reaction crash. At least five other vehicles, including a Mesa Public School bus, were involved.
Maldonado was killed in the crash.
The pickup driver suffered unspecified injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police say the pickup truck driver was not impaired at the time of the crash but might face some charges.
The intersection was closed for several hours, following the collision.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
