Janet Abelein Killed, Dwayne Abelein Injured in Deschutes County Accident on Highway 20

Deschutes County, Oregon (July 31, 2023) – The Oregon State Police are investigating a deadly traffic collision that killed Janet Diane Abelein, 68, of Portland, last Friday evening in Deschutes County.

The accident occurred on Highway 20 near milepost 15 at about 4:26 p.m. on July 28.

Abelein was heading eastbound on Highway 20 in a Subaru Forester when she made a U-turn in the highway’s center. The Subaru was then t-boned by an eastbound Ford F350 operated by Policarpo Vasquez, 46, of Redmond.

All the individuals riding in the two vehicles were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

Abelein died at the hospital while her passenger, Dwayne Milo Abelein, 68, of Portland, sustained injuries and was treated.

Authorities closed the highway for around one hour for an on-scene investigation.

The incident remains under investigation.
