Authorities reported that James Berta was riding his bicycle southbound on the highway when he collided with an SUV under unclear circumstances.
James Joseph Berta, a 78-year-old resident of Coronado, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene at about 1:49 p.m. The driver of the SUV stopped at the scene and rendered aid. No arrests were reported.
Police stated that neither alcohol nor drugs were considered factors in the crash. The exact cause of the collision has not yet been determined.
