Wrong-Way Driver Dies, Thomas Guerrero and Son Hospitalized After Turlock Accident on Highway 99

Turlock, California (June 21, 2023) – The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal wrong-way collision that killed a wrong-way driver and injured Thomas Guerrero and his 6-year-old son early Tuesday morning in Turlock.

The accident happened at about 3:15 a.m. on June 20 on Highway 99, north of Lander Avenue.

Police said Guerrero of Escalon was heading northbound in a Tesla when he crashed head-on into a wrong-way white sedan heading southbound in the northbound lanes. The impact caused the sedan to overturn on its side and burst into flames.

Responding fire officials extinguished the fire before declaring the male driver of the sedan dead at the scene.

Guerrero and his 6-year-old son riding in the Tesla sustained severe injuries from the collision. The 6-year-old boy was flown to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera with moderate injuries.

Police suspected the sedan driver was intoxicated with alcohol at the time.

The incident remains under investigation.
