John Schwiewek Dies After Salem Pedestrian Crash on Turner Road

Salem, Oregon (August 13, 2023) – The Salem Police Department has identified 81-year-old John Alvin Schwiewek as the man killed after a pedestrian accident involving a semi-truck on Saturday morning.

The deadly collision happened before 11:00 a.m. on August 12 on Turner Road.

Authorities confirmed Schwiewek was walking northbound on the east sidewalk of Turner Road when a refrigerated tractor-trailer hit him.

The semi-driver, 62-year-old John Lee Griffin, was exiting the Walmart parking lot and was heading northbound when the collision happened.

Schwiewek suffered fatal injuries in the accident.

Griffin remained at the accident location and was cooperative.

An investigation is ongoing.
