San Mateo County, California (September 30, 2022) – A bicyclist died after being struck by a car near Redwood City on Wednesday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the bicycle accident happened at around 11:30 a.m. on Highway 1 near Cypress Avenue.

A truck driven by 43-year-old Vincent D. Qualls was traveling southbound when drifted across the centerline it struck a bicyclist who was traveling northbound.

The impact caused the bicyclist to crash into a tree on the right shoulder of the northbound lanes.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the accident scene.

Qualls was taken to Seton Medical Center in Daly City for moderate injuries. He was later arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter with gross negligence.

No additional information about the accident was provided.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
