Prunedale Man Killed in Highway 129 Crash near Old Chittenden Road in Watsonville
Watsonville, California (October 4, 2021) – The Monterey County Sheriff Coroner’s Office identified 44-year-old Julio Ramirez Vasquez as the driver who died in a head-on collision involving a truck on Highway 129 in Watsonville.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on Friday just west of Old Chittenden Road.
A 50-year-old Salinas man was driving a 2021 Freightliner M2 heading eastbound on the highway behind a Dodge Durango driven by a 30-year-old Firebaugh man.
The Dodge’s driver slowed down for traffic but, for unknown reasons, the Freightliner’s driver failed to slow down in time and rear-ended the Dodge.
The Firebaugh man veered off the roadway after the impact and hit a cement wall with his Dodge.
The Freightliner also veered into the westbound lane and crashed head-on into an oncoming 2018 Mitsubishi Fuso box truck driven by Vasquez.
Vasquez, a Prunedale resident, sustained significant injuries and was being rushed to the hospital when he was pronounced dead.
The Firebaugh man driving the Dodge was treated for minor injuries.
The Freightliner’s driver was transported to Natividad Medical Center with moderate injuries. Authorities said the motorist was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be a factor in the wreck.
An investigating is ongoing.
