High School Assistant Principal Seriously Injured after Tire Flies Off SUV on I-80 in Pinole
San Francisco, California (June 3, 2021) – The assistant principal of San Francisco’s Lowell High School was seriously injured after her vehicle was struck by a tire that came off a vehicle on 80 Freeway in Pinole, San Francisco, on Memorial Day.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened on 80 Freeway near Appian Way shortly after noon.
A tire came off an SUV that was traveling westbound on the freeway. The tire flew over the center divider and struck an eastbound car.

The tire struck and damaged three other vehicles.
One of the vehicles sustained major damage to the front windshield and roof. The female driver of the vehicle, who has since been identified as Assistant Principal Holly Giles, was seriously injured in the crash and was rushed to an East Bay hospital where she was admitted to the intensive care unit.
It is unknown if anyone else was injured in the accident.
No additional information about the accident was provided.
The CHP is investigating the cause of the accident.
