Ashley Engen and Leticia Cardona Sustains Major Injuries in Deadly Crash in Fresno County
Fresno County, California (March 5, 2022) – A 14-year-old girl was killed, and three others were seriously injured when two vehicles collided Saturday morning at Mt. Whitney Avenue and Cedar Street in Fresno County, as per a local news source.
The wreck occurred at about 7:00 a.m. between Riverdale and Laton towns and north of the Kings River and the Fresno-Kings county line.
First responders found a 2020 Lexus sedan and a 2016 Honda Accord involved in the accident.
An initial investigation by officers revealed that Ashley Engen, 35, of Hanford, was driving the Lexus north on Cedar and, for unknown reasons, ran a stop sign at Mt. Whitney.
Engen drove into the path of the Honda, driven westbound on Mt. Whitney by 40-year-old Leticia Cardona of Laton.
The Honda broadsided the Lexus on the passenger side. The force sent both cars through the chain-link fence of a nearby property and into a lot at the northwest corner of the intersection. The Lexus overturned several times and stopped on its wheels about 150 feet from the intersection.
The Honda’s passenger, a 14-year-old girl, died in the crash. Authorities said she was Cardona’s daughter.
Cardona and Engen were taken by ground ambulance to Community Regional Medical Center in downtown Fresno with major injuries. Engen’s 15-year-old daughter, who was a passenger in the Lexus sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to the same hospital.
Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
An investigation is ongoing.
