Kerry Welsh Killed in DUI Car Crash at Vine and Hollenbeck in West Covina, Gilberto Moralez Arrested
West Covina, California (June 3, 2021) – A man has been arrested in connection with a car crash that claimed the life of a former high school student-athlete in West Covina on Saturday night, May 29.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened at Vine and Hollenbeck avenues around 11:15 p.m.
18-year-old Kerry Welsh was driving to a birthday party in West Covina to pick up her sister when a dark-colored Honda Accord failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the teenager’s silver Honda Accord.
Welsh was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries early Sunday, May 30, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Pomona Man Arrested for DUI after Deadly West Covina Crash
The driver of the second vehicle, Gilberto Moralez, 24, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and booked into West Covina jail.
The Pomona man was determined to have a prior conviction for misdemeanor resisting arrest in Los Angeles County.
Welsh recently landed a scholarship at Loyola Marymount University after graduating at Glendora High in 2020 where she played soccer and was lauded as the scholar-athlete of the year.
The CHP is investigating the cause of the accident.
