Faysal Hekmat Killed in Santa Barbara County Crash on Highway 1 near Vandenberg Space Force Base
Santa Barbara County, California (August 2, 2022) – A motorcyclist who died in a head-on collision on Thursday morning, July 29, near Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County has been identified as Faysal Hekmat, 33, of Santa Maria.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred on Highway 1 near San Antonio Road and Firefighter Road at around 7:40 a.m.
Natalia Mesa, 21, of Santa Maria, was driving a GMC Yukon SUV northbound when, for unknown reasons, she allowed the vehicle to cross the center median onto the southbound lane, where she collided head-on with a motorcycle.
The motorcycle then collided with another vehicle in the southbound lanes, and the Hekmat was ejected from the bike.
CHP said the motorcycle burst into flames following the crash, and Hekmat was fatally injured.
A female occupant of the SUV suffered major injuries and was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria.
A Jeep Cherokee and a Subaru Legacy were also involved in the crash.
The accident caused the closure of Highway 1 between VSFB Main Gate and the South Y until the afternoon.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
