David Smith Dies in Sacramento Collision on Highway 99
Sacramento, California (May 18, 2021) – A Sacramento man died following a multi-vehicle collision that occurred early Saturday morning in South Sacramento, according to the authorities.
The California Highway Patrol said the collision was reported just after 1:49 a.m. May 15., on Highway 99, south of Florin Road.
According to the report, 19-year-old Alan Reyes, of Roseville was driving a truck at a high rate of speed northbound on Highway 99 when he drifted off the side of the road when he neared slowed traffic.
His vehicle collided with a sign and a chain-link fence. He then drifted back across the roadway and slammed into the center divider.
The impact ejected a passenger from the truck Reyes was driving.
The truck then collided head-on with a van driven by David Jerome Smith, 31, of Sacramento.
Another driver in an SUV, identified as a 35-year-old man from Sacramento, tried to avoid the crashed vehicles and slammed into the center divider and hit the passenger lying on the roadway.
Smith died at the scene of the accident.
The passenger who was ejected from Reyes’ truck sustained major injuries and was rushed to a hospital.
Reyes was hospitalized with moderate injuries.
CHP said Reyes was also arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence.
The CHP is handling the investigation.
