Long Beach, California (February 19, 2022) – A bicyclist died Friday morning after colliding with a Long Beach city truck near the intersection of 17th Street and Oregon Avenue, as per a local news source.
Long Beach police responded to the scene after receiving reports of the crash at around 7:40 a.m.
As per the officers, a Long Beach city employee was driving a Ford F-250 truck south on Oregon from the city’s public maintenance yard to an assignment when a bicyclist ran a red light at the intersection.
The truck struck the bicyclist.

The 59-year-old city employee remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. He was later accessed at the city’s Occupational Health Division and sent home for the remainder of the shift.
Investigators said speed, impaired driving or distracted driving were not considered as contributing factors.
The report also added that another city employee working a different assignment witnessed the crash and remained at the scene.
An investigation is ongoing.
Californians are increasingly using bicycles to commute, for exercise or leisure. This means that more bicyclists are exposed to the risk of being involved in traffic collisions. All bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorized vehicles operators. When a crash happens between a bicycle and a vehicle, it is more likely that the cyclist will be injured.
