San Diego, California (June 4, 2021) – One person was killed in a fiery car crash that left three others injured on the 8 Freeway in Alpine, San Diego, on Thursday evening.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly collision on I-8 Freeway near Tavern Road at around 6 p.m.

A Toyota Solara coupe and a GMC Sierra pickup truck were traveling along the westbound lanes of the freeway when they collided for unknown reasons. The impact of the collision caused the pickup truck to roll down an embankment where it overturned and caught fire.

A female passenger of the GMC was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was not immediately released.

A second female passenger of the GMC and the male driver sustained major injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment.

The male driver of the Toyota was also hospitalized with major injuries.

Two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane of the freeway were temporarily closed as the officers examined the scene.

No additional information about the accident was provided.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the accident.
